September · Autumn · Humid subtropical — hot, sticky summers and cool, dry winters.

What to pack for Kyoto in September

A four-season city with extremes at both ends. June's tsuyu rainy season and August's 35 °C humidity are punishing; winter is dry, crisp, and surprisingly cold for the latitude thanks to the surrounding mountains.

Pack for Kyoto in September

Anchored on Kyoto's September climate.

Base layers

  • Linen or cotton tees (×4)

Daytime highs average 29°C — breathable fabrics matter.

  • Breathable shorts or skirt

Quick-dry beats denim when humidity is high.

  • No-show socks (×3)

Pairs with the walking shoes you'll actually wear.

Mid layers

  • Light cardigan for AC

Indoor air-conditioning often runs 6–8°C cooler than outside.

  • Linen overshirt

Doubles as sun cover at midday.

Outer shell & accessories

  • Packable rain jacket

Even dry-season afternoons can produce a sudden shower.

  • Sun hat

UV is strong when highs reach 29°C.

Footwear

  • Broken-in walking shoes

Travel days easily double your usual step count.

  • Walking sandals or trainers

Backup for the inevitable shoe-failure day.

Local quirks & hazards

  • Tsuyu (rainy season) mid-June to mid-July — daily showers, 80%+ humidity.
  • August humidity is the dangerous kind: hydrate, schedule temple visits before 10:00.
  • Winter cold in unheated wooden temples and old machiya — colder indoors than out.
  • Late-summer typhoon risk September–early October.

Dress & culture in Kyoto

  • Slip-on shoes are essential — you will remove them at every temple, ryokan, and many restaurants.
  • Shoulders and knees covered for temples; tank tops draw stares even in summer.
  • Tattoos must be coverable for onsen and many sentō — pack a long-sleeve rashguard if applicable.
  • Bring socks without holes. You will be seen in them constantly.

Leave at home

  • Lace-up boots — the constant on/off will exhaust you.
  • Strong perfume — considered intrusive in tea houses and small restaurants.
